| 369a | Bern | 1492 | Double Dicken | +MONETA:NO:BERNENSIS: | °S·VINCEN-NCIVS1492 | ![]() An extremely rare coin, possibly unique, the double dicken looks to be struck from the same die as the quadruple goldgulden below. At a weight of over 18g, this is an example of a dickabschlag or "thick strike", in English called a piefort (or piedfort). The coin was up for auction at Leu 82 with a starting price of $12,000 but did not sell. |

+MONETA:NO:BERNENSIS: | °S·VINCEN-NCIVS1492 | ![]() A very, very rare coin (possibly only two struck), this beautiful piece sold at Leu 82 for $16,800, this is an example of what in German is called a goldabschlag or "gold strike", in English an essai or pattern. While these coins may have circulated in a limited fashion, they were not ordinary pocket money. With a value of four goldgulden and a weight of 13.44g this is a large gold piece for the time. |

EBERH+COM+&+WIRT+ZENIOR | +ATTE-MPTO+ | ![]() This must certainly be the rarest of all possibly attainable early dated coins, the fantastic and unique (in public hands) Palmbaumschilling! The palm design is a tribute to the plant seen by Eberhard, ruler of Wurttemberg at the time, on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Only one other time in recent history has this coin been offered for sale, in 1903! Four others are known to exist in museums. Meister and Sonntag sold the coin shown above in October 2006, for €25,000 ($31,370) and is to my knowledge the highest price ever attained for an early dated coin. |
