COINS OF THE AUSTRIAN REALMS
To describe the coins of the Austrian branches of the Babenbergs, Habsburgs, and all their territories is nearly as daunting a task as to describe those of the German states. Habsburg lines married, split, died out, and territories held under their sway grew and shrank repeatedly. For now I will include the satellite regions like Olmutz and others here with a link to their own page.

The Babenburgs AND Habsburgs

EARLY MARGRAVES AND DUKES OF AUSTRIA & STYRIA
The land currently called Austria was founded when Holy Roman Emperor Otto II in 976 gave Leopold of the Babenberg Dynasty the title of Margrave of the East. Its territory contained much of what is modern Austria. During the reign of his son Henry I the word Ostarrîchi (from which the modern German word Österreich appears to have developed), was coined for the region. Ottokar I was Count of Steyr, a town in what would in 1056 become the Steiermark, later Styria.

(H.R.E. Frederick III) to continue in Tirol. Maximilian took control again over the Duchy of Austria after the death of Matthias Corvinus in 1490 who had defeated Frederick V in battle and was ruling in Vienna. Upon Frederick V's death, Maximilian became ruler over all Habsburg lands.

AUSTRIAN and AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE
In 1804 Francis II abandoned the title of Holy Roman Emperor when the Holy Roman Imperial Recess of 1803 had drastically reduced the number of Imperial cities and clerical territories. He then formed the Austrian Empire comprising his personal holdings from within the Holy Roman Empire. In 1806, the treaty creating the Confederation of the Rhine at last swept away the vestiges of the Holy Roman Empire for good.
