Anhalt-Bernburg

Anhalt-Bernburg was a German Principality whose capital was the city of Bernburg, existed until 1863. The principality was created in 1252 when the Principality of Anhalt was partitioned between Anhalt-Aschersleben, Anhalt-Bernburg and Anhalt-Zerbst. After the ruling family became extinct in 1468, Anhalt-Bernburg was merged with Anhalt-Zerbst. The latter was divided in 1603 among the lines of Anhalt-Dessau, Anhalt-Köthen, Anhalt-Plötzkau, Anhalt-Bernburg and Anhalt-Zerbst. In 1635 from Anhalt-Bernburg was separated the line of Anhalt-Harzgerode, which existed to 1709. In 1718 was created the Duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym, which was reunited with Anhalt-Bernburg in 1812. In 1847 Anhalt-Bernburg inherited the Principality of Anhalt-Köthen-Plötzkau. After the death of the last Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg, Principality was merged with Anhalt-Dessau.

Anhalt-Dessau

Anhalt-Dessau was a principality and later a duchy located in Germany. It was created in 1396 following the partition of the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst. The capital of the state was Dessau. Anhalt-Dessau experienced a number of partitions throughout its existence with Anhalt-Köthen being created in 1471. The principality was partitioned for a second time in 1544 with Anhalt-Zerbst, Anhalt-Plötzkau being createad. From 1561 until 1603 Anhalt-Dessau was under the rule of the Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst, and in 1603 Anhalt-Dessau was recreated and it was raised to a duchy in 1807. Following the death of the last Duke of Anhalt-Bernburg in 1863 all of the Anhalt lands came under the rule of the Duke of Anhalt-Dessau who then took the new title of Duke of Anhalt for the newly created Duchy of Anhalt.

Anhalt-Zerbst was a principality located in Germany. It was created for the first time in 1252 following the partition of the principality of Anhalt. The capital of the state was located at Zerbst. Anhalt-Zerbst ceased to exist in 1396 when it was partitioned between Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Köthen. It was recreated in 1544 when Anhalt-Dessau was partitioned. The second incarnation lost a lot of territory in 1603 when it was partitioned for a second time with some of its territory being given to Anhalt-Dessau, Anhalt-Bernburg, Anhalt-Plötzkau and Anhalt-Köthen. Anhalt-Zerbst lost more of its territory in 1667 with Anhalt-Mühlingen and Anhalt-Dornburg being created. In 1796 Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst came to an end with its territory being annexed by Anhalt-Dessau.
