SCHWARZBURG-RUDOLSTADT, - SONDERSHAUSEN
Key identification notes: Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen are lines that date back to the late 1500's. The arms show an Imperial-style double-headed eagle with the unusual charge below of a two-tined hay fork and horse curry comb. This represents the position of Imperial stable master that the Princes of Schwarzburg honorarily held. Look for one or both of these devices in the fields on earlier coins to assist identification. Rudolstadt's coins if not showing the arms often have the initials F.S.R.L.M. The charge of the Schwarzburg princes is a lion rampant facing left and is seen on the older coins, along with SCHW in the legend. More common mints of Sch.-Rudolstadt coins are Königsee (K), Leutenberg (L), and Rudolstadt itself (R). These letters might appear in the field. For Sondershausen coins, the abbreviated name itself is on the 19th c. coins, on earlier coins SOND or SONDH typically appear in the legend.
